Basquiat, A Life
Synopsis
When came the mid-1970s, the Pop Art movement was giving out its last twitches, its last breath, entrapped by the very soulless, cold and mechanical society it would depict. Calling it "an art makeable by everyone " in the early 1960s, Andy Warhol had indeed given its recipe.
And there came Jean-Michel Basquiat, telling another story in this period marked by a deep emptiness soaked with images cancelling each other out. And Warhol, the master thinker of this hyper Western world, the symbol of a mostly White culture, would become the student and learn about the world, practise his scales all over again with this African-American kid.
