Mapping The World - Japan : Back To The Forefront?
Synopsis
After the Second World War, disarmed by the Allies, Japan focused on the Yoshida doctrine: to be a political dwarf and an economic giant. But today, the Japanese ruling class wants to regain its geopolitical and military autonomy.
The Japanese ruling class – against a backdrop of growing Chinese appetites in the region – has new ambitions. Some countries such as France also welcome the shift in political relevance towards the Japanese (and Indian) power – as it could offset Chinese influence – relying heavily on what experts call the "Indo-Pacific axis ".
Except that the Japanese Emperor – traditionally a pacifist – but also the population – still traumatized by the Fukushima nuclear disaster – are out of step with this "return to the forefront " dreamed of by the Japanese elites.
