Mapping The World - Sahara : Sandy Quagmire?
Description
According to the UN, it is one of the last unsettled colonial disputes: Western Sahara. For 50 years, these desert areas – yet rich in raw materials – and their access to the sea have been the crux of an endless rivalry.
It lies between Morocco – which occupies 80% of the contested territory – and Algeria – which supports the Sahrawi independentists. This conflict also polarizes the entirety of Maghreb, Europe and even the UN Security Council – concerned with stabilizing a region that has been scarred by several Jihadi insurgencies already.
