Mucem - ‘Conquest and civilisation’: art at the service of colonial propaganda
Description
The French conquest of Algeria began in 1830.
The scene depicted here represents the submission of the regent of Algiers, Hussein Dey, on 5 July 1830. France is represented by antique-dressed figures bringing arts, sciences and peace to the Algerians. This propaganda image conceals the violence of colonisation, as well as the resistance led by Emir Abd el-Kader.
The Mucem is the Museum of the Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean in Marseille, France.
