Mapping the World - In China'S Sights: The Rebel State Of Taiwan
Synopsis
Mapping the World retraces the history of Taiwan, a fledgling democracy whose international status is unclear - a dot of a country that continues to hold out against its giant neighbour. The Taiwanese president, Tsai Ing-wen, has just been comfortably reelected, following a campaign in which she stressed the need to resist Chinese attempts at domination.
A year earlier, her opposite number in Beijing, the all-powerful Xi Jinping, reaffirmed his determination to bring the island territory of Taiwan under China's control, using force if necessary, on the same "one country, two systems " basis as Hong Kong.
