Cities of Tomorrow - Vertical Farms
Episode 3/3
Synopsis
On the roofs of New York and Montreal, "ageekculturists" combine new technologies and agriculture to produce, in the heart of the city, fresh, pesticide-free vegetables.
In Singapore, space, a scarce resource today, is being saved by erecting agricultural towers ten meters high.
In the Netherlands, state-of-the-art light-emitting diodes (LEDs) watch over urban crops by replacing the sun's rays in winter.
If no agricultural skyscraper has emerged from the ground, the technologies that allow it already exist. Projects are thus flourishing around the world, the gigantism of which is not always unanimous. Some also fear the voracity of the agri-food industry, which could derail Dickson Despommier's dream. Young architects react and appropriate the founding principles of vertical farms with the aim of converting the cities of tomorrow into autonomous ecosystems.
