Dates that Made History - - 753: The Foundation Of Rome
Description
Summary: April 21, 753 BC: Ab Urbe Condita - the Roman world had been certain of the day of its foundation for more than 1000 years. The mythical tale, formalized by Titus Livius, was based on the struggle of its founding twins: sons to a god, Mars, and a virgin, Rhea Silvia.
Archaeological research and historical critics are now convinced of two things: the city is older (with traces dating as far back as the 10th century) and the myth is more recent (contemporary of the 6th century and of Servius Tullius).
